This means that in order for cannabis to interact with the body it has to be transformed from its raw, acidic form through the application of heat.

Decarb or more technically  ‘decarboxylation’ refers to the heating of cannabis in order to ‘activate’ it prior to ingesting.

There are many ways to decarb cannabis. In fact that is one reason why cannabis is smoked, because at the point of combustion cannabis is instantly decarbed, ie activated.

It takes 3 hours at 100°C to convert THCA fully into THC and 4 hours at 98°C. At high temperatures above 160°C only about 10 minutes and at 200°C only seconds are needed to convert THCA fully into THC.

The trick is to not burn your cannabis. The lower the temperature the longer it takes ... however the less likely it is to burn and ruin your cannabis.

Here’s some general instructions, but know that there are many ways this process can be accomplished. There are even specialty appliances that decarb cannabis in a controlled, automatic way.

  • Preheat oven or toaster oven to 116C / 240F. Use an oven thermometer to ensure the oven is not over or under heated

  • Some people like to pre-grind their cannabis. Others prefer to decarb the cannabis buds when they are intact.

  • Spread the cannabis buds or pre-ground cannabis in an even layer in an oven proof dish. A cookie sheet, pie plate or glass casserole dish are ideal. Choose a container that is big enough for the amount of cannabis you want to decarb so the cannabis has lots of room.

  • Some people like to seal the container with tinfoil, or other lid, however others leave the container unsealed.

  • Place the cannabis in the preheated oven for 20 - 45 minutes.

  • Remove the container from the over and allow it to cool to room temperature.

  • The cannabis will have turned from green to golden yellow / light brown.

  • Store in a sealed jar until ready to use.
